Every legend has a place of origin. Salvatore Capezio was born in 1871 in Muro, Lucano, Italy. Although his hometown was beautiful, he yearned for more. After receiving training as a cobbler in Italy, he decided to move to the United States. At the young age of 17, Salvatore Capezio opened a small shoe repair shop just a stone's throw away from New York's historic Metropolitan Opera House. The sign above his door proudly displayed, "The Theatrical & Historical Shoemaker." His business started off by repairing shoes for the Metropolitan Opera, but soon transformed as he made an emergency pair of shoes for the Polish opera star Jean de Reszke. Capezio found pointe shoes to be a delicate balance between construction and engineering, a challenge he gladly embraced. Customers soon realized that few shoemakers were as committed as Capezio to tackle this challenge.
